The Wexford Senior Footballers travelled across the water to London last weekend for their opening Allianz Football League clash…

Allianz Football League Division 4:
London 1-08 v Wexford 1-13
28th January, McGovern Park

Both teams ran on to the pitch looking eager for the game to start. You could sense that London were up for the game from the start and that they were going to be a difficult opponent for Wexford, especially being at home.

With every ball played, they were determined be first and on every play, pressuring the Wexford lads. An early lead was taken by London which seemed to have awakened. Wexford began to realise that a game was going to be had today.

London kept the pressure on Wexford throughout the first half, with points being scored by both sides and an eventual goal being scored by London. The pressure was now on Wexford to reply. Half way through the first half, a change was forced on Wexford due to apparent food poisoning. Apparently, it was down to a bad bit of water melon as quoted by one of the Wexford players at the end of the game.

After the forced change, Wexford tightened up with their tactical game play. The first half then came to an end.

London were looking a bit tired after a good half. Wexford started to look stronger near the end of the first half. London are out first for the second half with Wexford running out a couple of minutes later. There must have been some heavy tactical talk carried out by the coach as Wexford are looking really up for this half.

The second half is the reverse of the first half. Wexford started to the ball first, with nice moves down the wings. In my view, there was definitely a tactical change carried out. There were some points either end for both teams with an excellent goal scored by Wexford.

At this stage, Wexford were now looking the stronger team and getting more in command as the minutes tick away. Daylight could then be seen between London and Wexford, with Wexford scoring a few more points. London scored a point at the end, but it was not enough. The full-time whistle was blown; It was a great win against London who were impressive in the first half.

“The first half was tight but the second half we got it together and played well,” a Wexford player stated at the end.
