Successful Wexford business man offers advice to budding entrepreneurs

It has been a good few years for Wexford native, Rory O’Connor…

O’Connor, who is the Founder and CEO of e-commerce business Scurri, recently opened their new office at Wexford’s Selskar Street and announced that they’ll be hiring 40 more people over the next two years.

For O’Connor, it was always important that their office would be based in Wexford and this is something that the Scurri CEO is particuarly proud of:

“We are very proud to have our HQ located in Wexford from where we support our customer base. We have customers located in Ireland, UK, Germany and even Australia who depend on our technology to power their online customer delivery experience. We recently opened our new state of the art office on Selskar Street to provide a space for our 60 staff to collaborate and we have plans to expand headcount to 100 over the next three years to support our business growth. One of our company values is family and growing Scurri from Wexford gives our people a balanced quality of life where lengthy work commutes are avoided. Scurri offers an attractive proposition to prospective employees in the South East and we have recently supported the Wexford Tech Meetup which was held at the Scurri HQ,” he told Wexford Weekly.

Scurri has become a huge player in the e-commerce market. Scurri Connect is customisable next generation delivery management software that was created to put you back in control of the most fundamental pillars of your business. Scurri Track Plus is a post-purchase communications solution that puts you in control of sending own-branded communications. Currently, they process over 100 million orders per annum which highlights the scale of the company.

For O’Connor, he seen the gap in the market and was a big believer in his business venture from the very beginning:

“The global eCommerce market has exploded over the last 20 years and has become a mission critical component of the retail industry. Our vision at Scurri is Connecting Commerce and our products have always had global potential. When I set up Scurri in 2010 I recognised the scale of the market pains and how Scurri could address these,” he said.

But just like with anything, there are always challenges. And that’s no different for a CEO of a global e-commerce company.

One of the common challenges is balancing the various business demands. We love our customers at Scurri and I make it a point to meet with as many customers as I can throughout the year. This can be demanding in terms of travel logistics but I can’t over emphasise the value of meeting customers, understanding their challenges and how Scurri brings value to their organisation. As CEO, I also manage multiple stakeholders including our investors and board, customers, industry associations and of course our people. In the eCommerce space things can move and change at pace so as CEO I also need to formulate our strategy, monitor performance and adapt to market or technology opportunities. As we scale, I need to ensure we maintain the culture of Scurri,” Peter told Wexford Weekly.

O’Connor’s rise has been sharp and fast in the e-commerce world and he has offered advice to budding entrepreneurs who are thinking about their next steps in the world of business:

“Firstly, have a plan but don’t delay on moving forward. Nothing trumps execution, momentum and a lean approach. Secondly, don’t be afraid to lean on a mentor. They can be a great sounding board when you need advice or a second opinion. Thirdly, be ambitious with your vision. We operate in a global economy now so successful start-ups from day one build for global ambition. Finally, seek adequate funding to support your ambitions. It is never a straight road in entrepreneurship and achieving business goals can take longer, with many challenges along the journey, so having the resources in place to support delivery,” he said.
