The biggest talking point of the game came in the dying moments when the referee Mark Dorrian awarded a dubious penalty to Leitrim.
The Leitrim player then stepped up and placed the penalty in the back of the net, with Leitrim finishing the game as one point victors on a score-line of 2-09 to 3-07.
A video of the penalty incident has surfaced online, with former Wexford player Adrian Flynn noting that it was an “absolutely shocking decision that cost Wexford today and potentially a shot at promotion.”
Meanwhile, former Leitrim sharpshooter, stated that he was “delighted for us obviously to get the win today, but on an officiating side of things, this is a shocking call.”
