Wexford’s Kate Kelly calls for more research and focus groups around issue of ‘skorts’ in Camogie

Tipperary Camogie’s motion to allow shorts to be worn by Camogie players was defeated at a recent congress…

The motion was – in essence – to give Camogie players a choice between wearing the ‘traditional’ skort, or to wear shorts, similar to the Men’s teams and similar to their Ladies Football counterparts.

On last night’s The Sunday Game on RTÉ, Aoife Sheehan called for giving players “a choice” while she also raised the issue of player retention, believing that it’s younger girls who are having issues with wearing skorts in particular.

Alongside her on The Sunday Game panel was one of Wexford’s greatest ever camogie players, Kate Kelly, who won nine All-Stars as a player.

Speaking on The Sunday Game, she discussed the issue around skorts in Camogie:

“There should be a consultation piece. Get out, review, discuss with all the players. We have a membership system. There’s surely a mechanism there within that to send a vote out and see what members think. You can segregate that by age; you can see what feedback you’re getting from parents, adult players, the administrators and non-players – and then you can make an informed decision.”

“The uniform has become more controversial in gymnastics, in hockey and in netball. And they’re all moving more to discuss that and be open about what players want and what they feel comfortable wearing,” Wexford’s Kate Kelly said on The Sunday Game.

The Sunday Game host, Jacqui Hurley, noted that the next congress will not take place for another three years, however, Kate Kelly made a valid point too.

“It does feed all the way down to the clubs and all the way back up. There’s a loss in translation somewhere, especially around contentious issues. There’s a need there to do some research, focus groups, getting groups together to review this – sooner than the three year period,” Kelly said.

The Camogie Association stated that it was a democratic process and that County Boards had an opportunity to vote on the matter.
