Wexford County Council submit planning proposal to restore historic Gorey Market House

Wexford County Council has submitted a planning proposal for the restoration of the historic Gorey Market House…

The iconic Gorey Market House building is an integral part of the fabric of the Main Street in Gorey, and has had a prominent place in the history, heritage and culture of the town.

Built in 1709, the building was used as a prison in 1798 and then as a courthouse and a parochial school during the 19th century , and then in recently times, as a Council Chamber.

An application to restore the Gorey Market House was submitted by the Wexford County Council on May 1st.

As part of the new ambitious plans for the Gorey Market House, they propose to restore the main building. Alongside that, the new two-storey building will provide café and retail space while it will also have a meeting room along with service accommodation.

One of the most significant features of the new proposed Market House is a link which attaches the Market House to the graveyard at the rear, leading out to the Market Square. As a result, it would lead to the “creation of new public square with access from Gorey’s Main Street.”

On the planning records, Senior Planner Diarmuid Houston noted that “the development as proposed would make a positive contribution to this key town.”

A previous report from Wexford Local highlighted that the renovation costs of the Gorey Market House could cost in the region of €8.1 million. Funding will be sought through THRIVE (the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme) which aims to renovate publicly owned derelict buildings to rejuvenate towns and centres.

The full planning proposal which includes all plans and relevant details can be found on the Wexford County Council’s website, which is now available for public viewing. Those interested, can search for the reference number LAC2403 on Wexford County Council’s planning website.
