Three young Wexford boxers crowned national Cadet champions over the weekend

The 2024 National Senior Cadet Championships took place last weekend at the National Stadium in Dublin…

It was some more good news for some Wexford boxers over the weekend, with three Wexford boxers crowned national champions.

Wexford town boxer, Kalib Walshe, continued his impressive run of form. He fought Patrick Myers (Spartaus) in the final of the 50kg division. The Wexford CBS boxer won 5-0 on the judge’s scorecards.

Taking place directly after Walshe’s fight was Mary Ann Furlong of Na Fianna in Wexford. She was fighting in the 52kg division, beating Shakila Cairns from Fr Horgans 4-1 in the final to win her 5th National title in as little as two years. The 16-year-old Wexford girl is now up for selection to fly out and represent Ireland in the European Championship in Bosnia.

Gorey Boxing club representative, Kayleigh Byrne beat Kerry Brown of Convoy in the 57kg. Byrne won unanimously, with the judge’s score-cards reading 5-0 in her favour.

Another Wexford native made it to the final of the Senior Cadets, but unfortunately she missed out on the trophy. In the 66kg category, Cassie Henderson of Phoenix Boxing Club beat Wexford’s Lauren Kehoe, representing South East Boxing Club.
