Wexford’s proposal shut down as GAA decide to stick with original date for Clare match

Wexford’s 12-point win over Laois on Saturday meant that Wexford will now march on to take on Clare in Semple Stadium…

The All-Ireland quarter-finals were originally fixed fixed to take place in Semple Stadium on Saturday 22nd June, a double-header between Wexford and Clare, and Dublin vs Cork.

However, after yesterday’s victory, Wexford GAA proposed to the GAA that their date for the All-Ireland quarter-final clash against Clare would be changed to Sunday 23rd.

Senior GAA officials met at a Central Council meeting this evening (Sunday). They have decided against that idea, and that the fixtures will remain on Saturday as part of a double-header in Thurles.

Discussions were held regarding the potential change with the Tailteann Cup, which will be played this Sunday in Croke Park. A vote was had to flip the fixtures, but the quota was not reached so the fixtures will remain as the same.

As per RTE journalist, Marty Morrissey, 47 attended the meeting with 27 against change.

Throw-in for the games are scheduled for 1.15pm and 3.15pm. A decision will be made tomorrow, Monday, to decide which match is played first.

Wexford were hoping that the game would be changed to Sunday as Wexford are hosting the Feile on Saturday too, the same day of the Wexford-Clare match.

It will mean that many young supporters and many volunteers involved in clubs will be unable to attend the Wexford game in Thurles due to their club volunteerism and club commitments.

Speaking after the Central Council decision, Wexford GAA said:

“A 60% majority was needed to have the fixture changed to Sunday, but just 57.4% voted in favour of the change. The direct clash with how we are hosting Féile na nGael that day is regrettable, considering the huge number of Wexford people involved in Féile as players, mentors, supporters, organisers, stewards, and many other roles.”
