Another medal on the mantlepiece for talented Wexford boxer

It’s been some year for this talented Wexford boxer…

Kayleigh Byrne, who trains out of Gorey Boxing Club, has added another medal to her collection.

Over the weekend, the young Gorey boxer won the Emerald Box Cup. In the semi-final, she defeated a three-time national champion from Northern Ireland.

In the final, which took place the following day, Kayleigh defeated a previously unbeaten Dutch champion, namely Angel Holzken, which was viewed as a unanimous victory in the eyes of the judges scoring the fight. This fight was in the Female Junior Division at 54kg, a lower weight Kayleigh previously fought at.

Just two months ago, Kayleigh was crowned a European Bronze medalist. The Gorey featherweight took home a bronze medal from Sarajevo following a UD defeat to eye-catching Romanian Mirela Elisa Cojocaru.

In April of 2024, she was crowned a national title All-Ireland winner before she won the National Senior Cadet Championships.

It comes just one week after the Wexford County Council agreed to hold a reception to celebrate Kayleigh’s achievements on the national and international stage.

It has definitely been an exciting year for the young Wexford boxer who continues to improve in every outing. There’s no doubt that Kayleigh has an exciting future ahead.
