Young Wexford footballer signs two-year deal with Serie A side in Italy

A young Wexford footballer has signed a two-year deal with an Italian side…

Young Wexford footballer, Oisin McDonagh, has signed a deal with Venezia FC, who play in the Serie A in Italy.

McDonagh, who hails from the Glynn-Barntown area, made his Senior League of Ireland debut for Wexford FC in their Friday 2-0 win over Finn Harps.

In January of 2024, he was signed to the Wexford FC academy. Upon his announcement, he was described as “a key member of the Ireland U16 side” and a person who “played a key role in the tournament in Turkey” which seen Ireland defeat Greece 6-0.

Six months later – in June of this year, Oisin travelled to Venezia FC for a trial and after impressing, he has signed a contract to join the Italian side.

Speaking to the Wexford FC media team, Head of Football Operations John Godkin was proud of what the move means for Wexford FC:

“It’s a very important milestone for our academy, demonstrating the great strides we are making as a club and the importance of our underage squads reaching the elite stages of the national leagues. We look forward to monitoring and following Oisin’s progress in the coming years.”

McDonagh is not the first Wexford native to join the Serie A ranks. Former Moyne Rangers player, Festy Ebosele, continues to play in the Serie A, while also making progress in the Senior Republic of Ireland men’s team.
