Many people would have predicted the Shelamliers to do quite well again in 2024…
And not many people would have predicted that Glynn-Barntown would have defeated them in the Wexford Senior Football Championship quarter-final.
The reigning Wexford SFC champions from 2023 – the Shelmaliers – looked like they had the game sealed and delivered, being up by 12 points at half-time.
Still hurt from their 5-25 to 1-07 hammering by Faythe Harriers in the Wexford Senior Hurling Championship last weekend, Glynn Barntown somehow emerged in the second-half with a renewed fire.
In the second-half, they scored three excellent goals, with the first goal coming on the 39th minute mark.
Two goals then came deep into injury time of the match, with the referee identifying that a minimum of 4 minutes would be played. The next goal came on the 64th minute mark and the final goal came in the 65th minute of the game – forcing the game to extra time, as the teams were tied at 3-08 apiece.
The goal-hungry Glynn-Barntown continued to exploit the Shelmalier’s defence in the extra time at Chadwicks Wexford Park, with another crucial goal coming straight away in the first minute of extra time. Conor O’Mahony then set-up Aaron Breen for Glynn-Barntown’s final goal of the game, sealing the deal for Glynn.
Glynn-Barntown won the game on a score-line of 5-10 to 3-11, in what was described as “one of the greatest ever comebacks” by Wexford GAA.
The remaining Wexford SFC quarter-final pairings will take place over this weekend and the pairings for those clashes can be found here.
Reigning champions Shelmaliers are now out of the Wexford Senior Football Championship, and their sole focus will now turn to the Wexford Senior Hurling Championship where they will be quite hopeful of overcoming Crossabeg/Ballymurn.
One of the greatest comebacks ever- @Glynnbarntown2 12 points down at half-time against reigning County Champions, @shelmaliers, scored 5 goals to win in extra time by 5 points in the first of the quarter finals in the Dominic Smyth Senior Football Championship.
