John Godkin highlights why Wexford FC move into town makes perfect sense

There was some fantastic news out of Wexford this week with the news that Wexford FC have been given a grant from the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Funding (LSSIF)

€2m has been allocated to Wexford FC toward their new ground.

With this great news I caught up with Wexford FC’s Head of Football Operations, John Godkin to get his reaction.

I asked John simply what does this mean for Wexford FC and he told me:

“It’s a win-win for football. Everybody will benefit. This facility will be open to the community. It is being called a stadium but there are training pitches alongside that and teams will be able to use them. Wexford football has been crying out for top facilities to match the rest of the country and now we will have this along with the Centre of Excellence in Enniscorthy.”

Another thought that has crossed my mind with this announcement was that the new location in the centre of Wexford town would attract fans and improve attendances rather than the remote Ferrycarrig. John totally agreed with this:

“Without a doubt for the attendances. Even logistically it will make a big difference. Being able to get a shuttle bus or walk to the game will help. Something different about a game in a town in places like Drogheda and Cobh. People can have a beer or two and walk to the game,” John told Wexford Weekly.

John left with a particularly interesting quote that has stuck with me:

“A game in the town is different. Something special about a Friday Night, under the lights in a town.”

To be perfectly honest, I totally agree with John here. Those that know me personally will know that I am a massive fan of Friday Night Lights.
