Armagh football legend to visit Wexford village for important talk

An Armagh footballing legend will be visiting a Wexford village this month…

Oisín McConville, who grew up in Crossmaglen in Armagh and now manages the Wicklow Senior Football team, will be visiting a Wexford village on January Tuesday 14th at 8:30pm.

From a very young age, he was passionate about football and had the experience of having a fortified British Army barracks beside the GAA pitch, growing up in the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland.

His name has since went down in the history books of all-time GAA greats; he was named man of the match in the All-Ireland final in 2002 when they defeated Kerry to claim the Sam Maguire Cup.

However, during these years, he also battled with a serious gambling addiction which almost cost his life. Since the mid 2000’s, he received help and he has since dedicated his life to helping people overcome addiction and gambling by sharing his story and releasing a book entitled “The Gambler: The Oisin McConville Story.”

He will be attending a talk as a guest speaker in the Askamore Community Centre as part of a Stimulating Talks initiative set up by Askamore local, Sean Byrne.

The other speaker on the night will be Catherine Mcurdy, who is manager of the Wexford Women’s Refuge and will speak on domestic abuse and gender violence.

Admission on the night is €10. For more information, you can contact 085-215-6848.
