Three long-serving Wexford hurlers retired ahead of the new inter-county campaign…
They included the St Annes duo of Liam OgMcGovern and Dee O’Keeffe, while former Wexford captain, Matthew O’Hanlon, also called time on his career.
This week, both Garry Doran and Ben Bernie of The Wexford Hurling Podcast caught up with Matthew O’Hanlon, who is currently residing in Australia.
One of the stand-out features of the podcast, now in its sixth year, includes the questions posed at the end of the podcast. One such question – “who’s the best player you ever played with” is always an interesting one.
“I’ve played with a lot of good players from a Wexford perspective. I would have played with Noel McGrath (Tipp) when I was playing Fitzgibbon Cup with UCD. But from a Wexford perspective, it was a privilege to play with Keith Rossiter, Rory Jacob, Eoin Quigley, Gizzy Lyng – all excellent hurlers – but I suppose, given our careers had overlapped so much and having seen him up close for such a long period of time, I would give that to Chinner – Lee Chin,” O’Hanlon told The Wexford Hurling Podcast.
“I remember when he first became a Wexford hurler. I saw where he came from, to where he is today. He was always a very good athlete, but had areas to work on.. in terms of his skills and hurling. But to where he is now – that’s testament to the hard work he’s put in. Hes’ a massive leader for us, always delivers on the biggest days – and some of the stuff he can do on the pitch, no other player can do,” O’Hanlon said.
The Wexford Senior hurlers will take on Cork this weekend in the opening game of the Allianz Hurling League. Even though they have a depleted panel entering the clash with last year’s All-Ireland finalists, there is still a lot of excitement building ahead of the new inter-county season.
