The Wexford Senior footballers earned promotion to Division 3 from Division 4 yesterday evening…
Wexford made it five from five in the Allianz Football League with their win over neighbours Wicklow at Chadwicks Wexford Park on Sunday evening. The Wexford footballers won on a score-line of 0-20 to 0-12.
After the game, the jubilant crowds entered the pitch to celebrate and congratulate the Wexford Senior football team on their promotion. Along with promotion guaranteed for the season, the Wexford Senior footballers will also have an Allianz League Division 4 final to look forward to in Croke Park in three week’s time.
It has been a remarkable year for John Hegarty’s Wexford Senior football team, earning promotion with still two games to spare. After the game, Hegarty spoke about his pride and pinpointed two long-serving players in particular that he was delighted for:
“It feels good – it feels really good! To do it after five games is remarkable. I couldn’t be happier for the lads, and prouder of them. This is all down to them. They’ve soldiered for a long time, often for little reward. This is a night that they will remember. A super night; big crowd, great win – and promotion – it’s super.”
“There’s lots of kids here… there’s lads that are a lot older than that. The likes of Kog (Kevin O’Grady) and Benji (Ben Brosnan), those lads will remember this. They stayed when the sensible and easy decision may have been to just call it a day. I’m just delighted for those two players in particular.”
The Wexford Senior footballers will look forward to an Allianz League Division 4 final in Croke Park. This match, which will also be broadcast live on television, will be played in three week’s time, on Saturday 29th March against an opponent still to be confirmed depending on other remaining results.
