Wexford’s Ben Brosnan: “I want to walk up the steps of the Hogan Stand…”

The Wexford Senior footballers earned promotion to Division 3 from Division 4 yesterday evening…

Wexford made it five from five in the Allianz Football League with their win over neighbours Wicklow at Chadwicks Wexford Park on Sunday evening. The Wexford footballers won on a score-line of 0-20 to 0-12.

After the game, the jubilant crowds entered the pitch to celebrate and congratulate the Wexford Senior football team.

Wexford’s win over Wicklow has guaranteed them promotion to Division 3 for next season, the first time there since 2017.

It has been a remarkable year for John Hegarty’s Wexford Senior football team, earning promotion with still two games to spare.

Wexford will still need to play their remaining two games in the Allianz League, but it holds no bearing. Either way, they will still have an Allianz League final to look forward to in Croke Park – while promotion is guaranteed, despite the result in the final.

Despite that, Wexford will be hoping to take home silverware. One Senior footballer, long-serving stalwart Ben Brosnan, now in his 18th year with the Wexford footballers – is one of those players that is craving silverware.

“It’s one of the main reasons why I came back. I said it at the start of the year to to our sports psychologist, Paul O’Riordan, that I want to play in Croke Park again. I want to walk up the steps of the Hogan Stand with the Wexford football team.”

In fairness to John and the management team, they’ve kept a lot of the lads there. Myself, Conor, Cog, Mick Furlong – we’ve all been there for 13, 14, 15 seasons. We played a game of golf there at the end of last season. No one really said anything about going back until the 17th or 18th hole. Someone looked over at each other then. If one of us was going back, we’d all go back. I think Mick Furlong made the first move; and then, it’s hard not to. When you have a really good group of lads there, there’s a really good bond – a good team and we’re playing good football. If I’m still able to contribute anything, I want to be still there,” Brosnan told Shane Roche after the game.

The Wexford Senior footballers will look forward to an Allianz League Division 4 final in Croke Park. This match, which will also be broadcast live on television, will be played in three week’s time, on Saturday 29th March against an opponent still to be confirmed depending on other remaining results.
