Glen Malone: “We haven’t been there in a long time, but silverware is on the table”

After six years playing in Division 4, the Wexford Senior footballers earned promotion to Division 3 over the weekend…
Wexford defeated Wicklow on a score-line of 0-20 to 0-12 in front of their home crowd and with two games to spare in the Allianz Football League campaign. Across all of the Allianz Football League divisions, Wexford were the only team to go unbeaten – and were the first team to be promoted following a successful League campaign under the helm of manager, John Hegarty, in his third year in charge.
On the pitch after the game, we caught up with long-serving Wexford footballer, Glen Malone.
Asked what promotion to Division 3 meant to him after tough years of fighting to secure it, Wexford’s Glen Malone explained:
“It means absolutely everything…. We’ve been battling for it very long at this stage to get to this point and to do it in 5 games, it’s unbelievable,” he told Wexford Weekly.
“We’ve always had the footballers who are accurate shooters and quick runners with a full team of athletes. These new rules suit us down to the ground. We’ve so many dangerous runners around the middle, and incredible forwards kicking the points,” he said.
The Wexford Senior footballers will now have an Allianz League final to look forward to, taking place in Croke Park in three week’s time on Saturday March 29th. Malone echoed similar sentiments to Ben Brosnan post-match – and they’ll be going there to win:
‘Yeah the League final is unbelievable. It’s a big day out in Croker. We haven’t been there in a long time, but silverware is on the table now too, so we’re all out for that,” he told Wexford Weekly after the match.
