Wexford selector provides injury update on three Wexford hurlers

With the conclusion of the Allianz Hurling League over the weekend, preparations are well and truly underway for the Leinster Senior hurling championship…

For the entire League campaign, Wexford have been without long-serving Wexford Senior hurlers, both Liam Ryan and Conor McDonald.

Last week, it was revealed that Liam Ryan is closing in on a return to the inter-county scene. Although he didn’t feature in Wexford’s win over Limerick last weekend, manager Keith Rossiter did note that if it was a Championship match, he would have likely featured.

Speaking on the Wexford Hurling Podcast this week was Wexford Senior hurling selector, Jason Ryan. Ryan echoed similar sentiments to Rossiter, noting that Ryan will be ready for the Leinster Championship:

“Liam Ryan is smiling lots at the moment. He’s in really good form. He’s hopping around the place. He’s going to be ready to rock soon. All the medical team have worked really well to get him back; he’s progressing really well. The resilience of Liam Ryan in the last 18 months. Oh Mother of God. He’s had so many niggles and injuries and different things. He’s had some tough times and he’s overcome them,” Jason Ryan said.

Meanwhile, he also provided an injury update on Naomh Eanna clubman, Conor McDonald. Like Ryan, McDonald hasn’t featured in Wexford’s 2025 League campaign whatsoever after undergoing surgery. Unlike Ryan, McDonald will not be available for the opening rounds of the Leinster Championship, but noted that his recovery is going well:

“Conor is progressing. He’s not doing as much necessarily with us because he has different return to training protocols to follow. He’s on the way, but he’s making really good progress. One thing that Conor, Liam and a lot of these fellas have in common is trying to hold them back so that they don’t do too much too soon. Conor has still a little bit more to go so it’s hard for me to say if he’ll be ready for this game or that game, but please God, he’ll be ready to make some involvement in the Leinster Championship,” Wexford selector Jason Ryan said.

Another player on the injury list is Askamore/Kilrush clubman, James Byrne.

“James unfortunately is chasing himself at the moment. At the start of the year, he started really well. He got sick for a nice while over Christmas. Since then, he really progressed and improved. And now, his hamstring is not great at the minute. Exactly when he’s going to be back… we’re still waiting for little bits of information on it,” Jason Ryan said on the Wexford Hurling Podcast.

Some more good news was the fact that no other injuries were picked up over the weekend with Wexford’s win over Limerick.

The Wexford Senior hurlers have less than four weeks until the Leinster Senior hurling championship. An overseas on the cards to Portugal is on the cards as they bid to put in their final preparations for the upcoming campaign.

First up for the Wexford Senior hurlers in the Leinster Championship will be welcoming Davy Fitzgerald’s Antrim to Wexford Park. An away clash against Dublin then awaits one week later. After that, games against Galway and Offaly will take place, with the final group game taking place against Derek Lyng’s Kilkenny side.
