Wexford Senior hurlers to partake in overseas training camp

With the conclusion of the Allianz Hurling League for the Wexford Senior hurlers, attention has swiftly turned to the Leinster Championship…

The Allianz Hurling League concluded over the weekend. Wexford finished on a relatively positive note. Their final game of the Allianz League was a trip to the Gaelic Grounds to face Limerick. Heading into the game, Keith Rossiter’s charges were already relegated to Division 1B; even though it was a dead-rubber for both teams, Wexford came away from Limerick with a 1-19 to 1-12 victory, allowing Limerick to only score 1-05 from play.

The Wexford Senior hurlers will have no time to dwell on their relegation. With the victory over Limerick, mixed emotions were evident. Even though they defeated a strong Limerick side, they were still relegated to Division 1B. But, beating Limerick in the final game of the Allianz League, can only be seen as a positive with the Leinster Championship quickly-approaching and now less that four weeks away.

Preparations are well and truly underway for the Leinster Senior hurling championship. Wexford, similar to many other inter-county GAA teams, will be utilising the four-week break and they are set to partake in an overseas 5-day long training camp.

The Wexford Senior hurling team are set to embark on a trip to sunny Portugal.

Whereas many people would go to Portugal to enjoy a few beers and to soak up the warm weather on the beach, the Wexford hurlers are going there to train.

The Wexford Senior hurlers had hosted fundraising events earlier to help with the costs of the training camp. One such fundraising event was the recent Cheltenham Gold Cup fundraising event, which was held on March 14th 2025 at the Talbot Hotel in Wexford.

Overseas training camps such as this allow for management to get a full-look at the members of the team and panel. With all-access and without distractions such as work, school, or college, it provides an excellent opportunity for the players to impress the management set-up. Meanwhile, the trip abroad will also improve camaraderie within the group and allows players to train like professionals for the 5-days.

Along with Wexford, Kilkenny are also set to embark on a trip abroad. Just yesterday, Michael Verney of the Irish Independent revealed that Kilkenny are set to break tradition and enjoy an overseas training camp for the very first time. Outside of the Leinster Championship, the Limerick hurlers are set to jet off to the Algarve in Portugal too. They are some of the many inter-county teams that value the overseas training camps as excellent preparation for the upcoming provincial championships and Liam McCarthy Cup.

When successful Limerick manager, John Kiely, was asked about the reasons why they were going, he said:

“The journey that lies ahead because ultimately those ties, bonds and sense of unity and togetherness is a vital part of what team sport is about.”

First up for the Wexford Senior hurlers in the Leinster Championship will be welcoming Davy Fitzgerald’s Antrim to Wexford Park. An away clash against Dublin then awaits one week later. After that, games against Galway and Offaly will take place, with the final group game taking place against Derek Lyng’s Kilkenny side.
