A new chapter begins for Gorey Athletics Club

A large and enthusiastic crowd gathered this week at the Loch Garman Arms Hotel for the public meeting to relaunch Gorey Athletics Club – and what unfolded was more than just an information session. It was a moving, powerful moment of community pride, shared memories, and a clear vision for the future.

Over 30 people attended, including representatives from Athletics Ireland (AAI), with Colm Byrne (Regional AAI) and John Joe Doyle (Wexford AAI) both in attendance to offer their full support. Byrne summed it up perfectly: “We’re delighted to see Gorey back on the map.” With Gorey AC reinstated, Wexford now boasts 16 athletics clubs across the county.

One of the most emotional highlights of the evening was the bestowal of Honorary President to Kevin Molloy, the only surviving founding member of the original Gorey Athletics Club, which was formed in 1958. Kevin’s words reflected both the club’s rich heritage and its potential future. He recalled the early days of the club, the events they trained for, and the pride of hosting the All-Ireland Track & Field and Cycling event at the Showgrounds – a venue which will now be home once again to Gorey AC.

The club has also engaged in positive discussions with local councillors, aiming to become the anchor tenant in the future Saint Waleran’s sports development in Gorey. With the town and surrounding areas of Courtown, Ardamine, and Riverchapel continuing to grow, the need for a thriving athletics club has never been greater.

The evening also paid tribute to a legendary local figure, Tommy Doyle – known to many as “Tommy Sports” – who was mentioned time and again for his lifelong commitment to the children of Gorey and his work with the original club. The new committee made it clear: his legacy will be continued.

Dean Glennon (Secretary) and David Fitzpatrick (Treasurer) spoke with passion about the incredible work that has gone into reviving the club. They introduced the new committee and welcomed a team of dedicated coaches who will cater for all levels and abilities. Application forms for new members were in high demand – in fact, they didn’t print enough.

A special welcome was extended to athletics legend Mary Hickey – the only woman to have run every Dublin City Marathon since it began in 1980. Mary fondly remembered her time training in Gorey with her club and shared warm memories of Tommy Doyle.

The evening concluded with a lively Q&A session and heartfelt thanks from David Fitzpatrick to Michael Gleeson and the Loch Garman Arms Hotel for hosting. As the formalities ended, the conversations continued – with many eager to get involved and dozens of membership forms returned on the night.

The message was clear: Gorey Athletics Club is back – and it’s here to stay.
