“Bring on Dublin” – Cian Byrne reacts to Wexford’s win over Antrim

The Wexford Senior hurlers defeated Antrim in the opening round of the Leinster Championship match on Saturday…

Wexford defeated Antrim on a score-line of 2-24 to 0-19. Wexford weathered an early Antrim storm, going down by five points to one in the opening ten minutes. Wexford were also dealt a major blow on the 22nd minute mark, when wing-forward Jack O’Connor received his marching orders after getting a straight red card from referee Colm Lyons.

Wexford’s goals came in the second-half, courtesy of both Kevin Foley and Cian Byrne.

After the game, Cian Byrne caught up with Liam Spratt of South East Radio.

“It wasn’t a bad goal. Cian Molloy did a good job. He scooped it up to me at the end. But look, it kind of filtered through the whole game. The better man in a better position was getting the ball and our percentages on shooting was miles up from previous League games, which is a massive positive to take. It’s great to see the wides in single digits. Compared to League, we’ve been hitting double-digits. It’s a massive improvement. To get a result like that, on the first day against Antrim – a tough side – in front of your home crowd and down to 14 as well – it’s brilliant to get off to get off to a good start and get two points on the board,” he told South East Radio.

“The ball fell nicely for me for the goal. I had two points missed beforehand – and I didn’t feel like I was in the game. But, it’s important to just keep working hard when you’re not in the game and your chance will come – and luckily it did. Happy enough – and happy with the result. Bring on Dublin next week,” he said.

“We’re on a high now. That’s my first game in about eight weeks; I’m glad to be back and I’m looking forward to next Saturday.”

There’s no doubt that tougher tests lie ahead for Wexford. Next Saturday, April 26th, Wexford will travel to Parnell Park to take on Dublin.
