SSE Thermal has announced the opening of its Great Island Community Investment Fund for the second consecutive year.
SSE Thermal plays a crucial role in keeping the lights on across Ireland. In 2015, SSE Thermal opened Great Island Power Station in County Wexford, one of the largest and most efficient gas powered plants in Ireland. Almost a decade in operation, the site continues to be essential in supporting security of supply by generating enough power to supply approximately half a million Irish homes.
With SSE Thermal’s commitment to being a good neighbour, the dedicated Community Investment Fund has been designed to support initiatives that make a meaningful contribution to the Great Island community.
In the fund’s first year, 13 groups received funding totalling €25,000. This year, Community groups can apply for a share of the €25,000 fund, to be used within the local area to help benefit projects and charities in need of support. Up to €2,000 will be allocated to each successful project.
Online applications are now open and close on Monday 19 May 2025 at 9am.
Priority for funding will be given to applications in closest proximity to the station, and those from the areas of Cheekpoint and Great Island and Campile.
Jonah Faulkner, SSE Thermal’s dedicated Community Liaison Officer for Great Island told Wexford Weekly that:
“We’re proud to be opening our Community Investment Fund for a second year. SSE Thermal are committed to creating real, lasting value in our communities, and we are excited to see the positive changes this year’s fund will bring to the Great Island area. We strongly encourage local community groups, no matter how big or small, to apply. If you have a project that could benefit the area, we’d love to hear from you.”
