
Ed Sheeran’s love of County Wexford continues…
Global superstar, Ed Sheeran, was the most recent guest on The 2 Johnnies podcast.
On the podcast, both Johnny B and Johnny Smacks asked Sheeran to identify his favourite town across all of Ireland.
Without hesitation, Sheeran identifed a Wexford town as his favourite across all of Ireland:
“Gorey… Gorey still reminds me of childhood. It has changed so much. But there’s still the same places that I would have gone as a kid,” he said.
Ed spent childhood summers there, influencing his love for Irish music and culture.
Ed Sheeran also paid a visit to Wexford town during the 2025 Fleadh, gathering signficiant global attention for Wexford.
At age 24, Ed’s grandfather, Bill Sheernan, met Anne “Nancy” Mulligan, a Catholic nurse from Gorey, County Wexford, in the Republic of Ireland, while both were at Guy’s Hospital in London.
The song “Nancy Mulligan” (from the 2017 deluxe edition of ÷, recorded with Irish band Beoga) is a direct tribute to his grandparents’ romance, narrated from Bill’s perspective, and references their Wexford life and elopement
Bill Sheeran was also a founding member of the Gorey Boxing Club in 1983 after retiring to Gorey with his wife Anne. The boxing club remains open to this day and has been the home to an array of talent in recent times.
