Michael Martin from Rathnure Co. Wexford will present the findings of his Nuffield Ireland Scholarship research at the annual Nuffield Ireland Conference which takes place in the Horse and Jockey Hotel, Thurles, Co. Tipperary on Friday, 14th November 2025…
A farmer and lecturer, Michael’s research explores Ireland’s position in the global beef market.
Michael completed an undergraduate degree in Agricultural Science from SETU, before he went on to study a Masters in Ruminant Nutrition at Harper Adam’s University.
He currently works on the family farm at home and lectures in Agricultural Science in Kildalton College and Carlow Institute. As an avid member of his community, Michael is involved in his local GAA club on the senior hurling team and he is currently club secretary.
Michael’s Nuffield Ireland research highlights beef market advantages, such as EU access and strong social licence, as well as challenges like dairy-origin beef quality and consumer price sensitivity.
His recommendations include a beef finishing bonus, improved marketing, and stronger integration of dairy and beef systems to secure Ireland’s role as a sustainable beef leader.
