Larry O’Gorman has pinpointed some of the major concerns he has over the future of Wexford hurling…
Faythe Harriers clubman, Larry O’Gorman, who won an All-Ireland title in 1996 and was named Hurler of the Year during that historic season 30 years ago, recently spoke on a new Indo Sport podcast about his time under Liam Griffin in 1996 and his lasting memories from that period.
Speaking on a recent Indo Sport podcast issued today, O’Gorman also pinpointed multiple concerns he has for Wexford’s future. One of his concerns is the number of key players who are pushing towards their final years representing the Purple and Gold.
“We’re not in a position to challenge for the Liam McCarthy Cup. We’re struggling to even get into third placed in Leinster at the moment. We’re on a little bit of a downer. I’m not sure where we’re going to be over the next two or three years. Will Keith Rossiter stay on? I’m not sure. Will the likes of Lee Chin, Liam Ryan, Kevin Foley, Mark Fanning? They’re up in their 30s, some are 33/34 now. Then of course, the likes of Rory O’Connor, Conor McDonald, McGuckin… we’re after losing four or five players this year — so, we are down a lot of big names over the last 2/3 years,” O’Gorman said.
The former Wexford hurler also doesn’t believe that Wexford have enough hurlers coming through in the Model County to challenge the top teams — and believes that Wexford’s mentality needs to change too:
“I don’t know whether the quality of players of what’s coming through at the moment are up to the intensity… especially with what’s happening in Munster. We’re in a third or fourth placed in Leinster at the moment. We played well in some of the games this year — but we ran out of steam, we ran out of legs, and we ran out of thoughts and ideas on how to win again. We’re back to the old ways of Wexford in the early 90s — we don’t believe in ourselves, we don’t believe we’re good enough to win.”
“The youngsters coming through have no major victories in terms of minor or under 21. We have some bright sparks coming through, but will it be enough to get to up to the levels to be even number one in Leisnter? I think we’ve an awful lot of work to do to be honest,” O’Gorman stated.
