All the sporting talk across the County at the moment is relating to the next Wexford Senior hurling manager…
Former Wexford hurler, Paul Carley, was the most recent guest on this week’s Wexford Hurling Podcast.
Along with making predictions for the looming Wexford hurling championships, he also made a suggestion for the next Wexford Senior hurling manager.
“There’s a lot of talk about Declan Ruth, Derek McGrath and Jason Ryan. There’s always a lot of talk but then someone comes under the radar and takes it. I think Derek McGrath is a good fit, but I’d love to see Tom Mulally take it. In all my years playing, I think Tom was the best coach I’ve ever played under.”
“He’s only after committing to the Annes, so it’s probably a little bit unfair to mention him — but I think he comes with a great CV. He’d be one of the front-runners for me. Whether he’s interested or not, I have no idea,” Carley said.
Kilkenny native Tom Mullally, who managed the Carlow Senior Hurling team for five seasons, has committed to the management setup of the St Annes Senior hurling team for 2026. Hosts Ben Bernie and Garry Doran questioned whether this could be a barrier or not:
“He could see out the Championship with the Annes. You have to put someone in place quick too. I don’t think it’s a barrier; I think it’s a plus. He’d see plenty of games and matches, and he’s not the type of fella who would favour the Annes come next January when he’s picking a panel for Wexford. I think if he’s named in 3 or 6 weeks time that it’s only a positive that he’s front and centre of the Wexford Championship too. It’s a very important appointment,” Carley told The Wexford Hurling Podcast.
