Unique fencing event takes place in Wexford

Selskar Abbey, historically no stranger to sword combat, heard the clashing of steel once again as Goats Head Historical Fencing took to the square at its feet in an exciting demonstration of historical fencing…

As part of the first year of the Otherworlds Sci-Fi Festival, Goats Head members braved the less than ideal weather last Saturday 27th of June to spar in Selskar Square. The rain didn’t dampen the fighting spirit of the Goats though as they put on a fantastic display of HEMA.

HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) combines physical combat with scholarly research to create a rich understanding of tradition and ways to train techniques used since the Middle Ages by knights, mercenaries and merchant patricians to defend themselves.

Goats Head Historical Fencing train these practices weekly in both Wexford and Waterford, and are always happy to welcome beginners into their ranks. They can be found on Facebook or at www.goatsheadhistoricalfencing.com.

The members of Goats Head Historical Fencing would like to thank the lead organisers of Otherworlds Sci-Fi Festival, Wally O’Neill and Ken Kavanagh, for making it possible to present this display of historical fencing to the public.

Two fencers using smallswords, fashionable weapons of nobility, military officers, and haute bourgeoisie before the French Revolution.
The Montante, or two-handed sword often measures the height of the wielder and was used to guard narrow alleys or bridges.
The fencer on the left is using a longsword, a popular weapon on the battlefield during the late middle ages and renaissance. On the right is the arming sword, a one-handed sidearm, paired with a buckler, a small round shield, which could be used both for defense and attack.
