Rory O’Connor Scores Seven Points For DCU The Day After Winning Walsh Cup Final

The Yellowbellies tasted their first piece of 2020 silverware on Saturday evening after an inspired comeback saw Fitzgerald’s charges overthrow the Tribesmen

St Martins club-man Rory O’Connor came on as a second-half substitute during yesterday’s clash against Galway. Even though he failed to get on the scoresheet, he was involved in several crucial attacks that helped Wexford regain silverware.

The celebratory period did not last long though, as attention soon turned to another game.

The following afternoon, O’Connor and his DCU team-mates played Maynooth University.

The St Martins club-man plays for DCU alongside Wexford counterparts Damien Reck, Oisin Foley, Conor Firman, Conor Hearne and Rory Higgins.

On the other side for Maynooth, the Naomh Eanna duo of Jack Cullen and Eoin Molloy, two players who were also on Fitzgerald’s Walsh Cup winning panel, featured in defence. The Naomh Eanna duo lined out at wing-back and centre-back respectively.

Also on the Maynooth team representing Wexford was Diarmuid Kehoe and Cormac Byrne in defence, while recent addition to Fitzgerald’s panel Mikie Dwyer came on in attack.

Both Conor Hearne and Eoin Molloy scored a point each.

But, it was O’Connor who proved crucial for DCU this afternoon in a tale of two free-takers, scoring seven points, all from placed balls.

The game ended on a scoreline of 1-20 to 1-12 in favour of DCU, who now march on to the quarter-final stages of the Fitzgibbon Cup having secured two wins from two.
