At a soup kitchen which took place at Wexford CBS last night, the organisers of the Wexford People Helping People group were approached by a nineteen-year old.

Members talked to him for an hour, where he told them his story about his life to date.

“The young Wexford man’s mother died unexpectedly when he was 16. His father was never present. He was left fending for himself without an adult working with him to link him in with grief counseling or support services. He has been sleeping in squats for the last two years – he has been trying to access homeless services, but he is having difficulty with this because he got in trouble for a minor affray and part of his probation is that he cannot be around another individual who is currently housed in the men’s hostel, leaving this young man out on the street.”

The young man, who is currently on social welfare, dreams of becoming a carpenter. The group Wexford People Helping People are seeking an employer to take him under their wing as an apprentice carpenter. They’re looking to give the man a chance at fulfilling his dream:

“He is currently on social welfare at €100 per week as he’s under 25. He is seeking full-time employment to help afford to get into private rented accommodation His dream is to qualify as a carpenter – we are seeking someone to give him a chance and take him on as a carpentry apprentice. He had his safe pass and manual handling already completed. We will be working with him closely until he is housed and in permanent employment and settled. This young man fell through the cracks due to a series of unforeseen circumstances. He is a capable young person and the last two years are a testament to that. He would be a dedicated employee,” the Wexford People Helping People organisers stated.

If you, or if you know anyone that would be willing to give this man a chance, then please contact the Wexford People Helping People page, or contact Claire on 083-3664149.
