Two From Two For Darragh Egan And The Wexford Senior Hurlers

Not many would have predicted a start like that for new manager Darragh Egan and the Wexford Senior hurling team…

With All-Ireland champions Limerick at home and with Clare away in Cusack Park in their first two games, it was meant to be a difficult Allianz Hurling League start for Darragh Egan and the Wexford Senior hurlers.

However, last weekend, Wexford defeated Limerick in a low-scoring affair at Chadwicks Wexford Park. And now today against Clare, Wexford proved that the previous result against the All-Ireland champions wasn’t just luck alone; instead, they highlighted that they can mix it with the big boys.

In Ennis today, the game ended on a scoreline of 1-20 – 2-20.

Here, we look at some of the talking points following Wexford’s win in Ennis.

Grinding out results:

As mentioned, it’s two from two now for Darragh Egan and the Wexford Senior hurlers in the Allianz National Hurling League. Both last week’s game and this week’s game highlighted that Wexford are able to grind out difficult results. While some could argue that our opposition was not at full strength, it must be noted that Wexford’s has not been either. We’ve players like Kevin Foley and Lee Chin still to come back onto the team.

Rory O:

St Martins club man Rory O’Connor was on a different planet today. O’Connor, with number nine on his back, started in the full-forward line and found himself on a lot of direct balls in the first half specifically. O’Connor was at a different level, scoring points from all angles. O’Connor was also Wexford’s first goalscorer today. His speed and fearless running directly at the opposition’s defence must be a nightmare. It was O’Connor who deservedly picked up the TG4 Man of the Match award after a great performance, finishing with a personal tally of 1-04 from play.

Fanning’s saves

If it wasn’t for Glynn-Barntown’s Mark Fanning in between the posts, Wexford would not have won this game. Fanning proved crucial to the outcome of the game as he pulled off some excellent saves. He stood up to stop multiple point-blank saves, injuring himself in the process but opting to remain on the field.

Even for Clare’s goal, Fanning made it a difficult task as he pulled off two top-drawer from close range from John Conlan before it fell comfortably to the Clare corner-forward to place it into the net.

Next up for Darragh Egan and the Wexford Senior Hurlers in the Allianz Hurling League is in two weeks time, on Sunday 27 Feb, away to Galway.
