There is a lot of excitement building towards the start of the new hurling and football season…
Not just are we looing forward to the start of the new season, but we are also looking forward to the start of a new dawn with the new Wexford Park floodlights. It allows for competitive games to be played under lights at Wexford Park.
The first competitive game played under lights at the stadium will be when Wexford host Kilkenny in the Walsh Cup on January 21st. The following week, the Wexford Senior Footballers will host London under lights in their opening Allianz League clash.
Speaking earlier in the year on South East Radio, Wexford GAA Chairman said that the new flood lights in the park will be like no other GAA county ground; instead, they will be ‘the Aviva’ in terms of floodlights.
“The lights have special features that are in no other GAA stadium in Ireland. The lights that we are installing are the ‘Aviva’ in terms of light shows, and music features and show on. We set out specifically to show ambition in Wexford town. Something that we can be proud of an that kids will always want to play in Wexford Park. There will be fireworks,” he said.
This morning, Wexford GAA released a teaser video on to their TikTok page, hinting that the Wexford Park floodlights will be similar to those at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club in England. Wexford GAA posted a video of a light show at Sheffield Wednesday, with the comment ‘Looking forward to Chadwicks Wexford Park floodlights on Jan 21st 2023.’
While it has not been mentioned, perhaps the light-show feature has been added with the hope of hosting concerts there in the future, similar to Páirc Ui Chaoimh in Cork.
