Wexford Hurler Returns From Travels And Re-joins Wexford Senior Hurling Team

A Wexford hurler has re-joined the Wexford Senior hurling team…

St Martins club-man, Joe O’Connor, has joined Darragh Egan’s ranks with the Wexford Senior hurlers.

O’Connor was travelling around the world for the last year. O’Connor opted out of the new set-up under Darragh Egan in December 2021.

During the end of Davy Fitzgerald’s tenure, the versatile Joe O’Connor battled his way onto the starting fifteen and he became a regular starter in the corner-back position.

O’Connor has been training with the Wexford Senior hurlers and he was apart of the set-up for the Kilkenny game, which took place earlier this month to open the floodlights at Chadwicks Wexford Park.

His decision to return to the Wexford Senior hurling team will be a welcomed boost for Darragh Egan, as they prepare for an upcoming clash against Galway.

O’Connor came on as a substitute against a strong Waterford team in a practice match which took place in the Ferns Centre of Excellence last weekend.

This weekend, the Wexford Senior hurlers are due to play Galway in the Walsh Cup final this weekend. The Wexford vs Galway match will also be the opening Allianz League clash for both teams after both teams agreed to double down on the fixture.

Whether he is at the fitness levels needed to play against Galway remains to be seen, although it would be unlikely. Despite that, his re-addition to panel will add to the healthy competition for places for the corner-back spot, with the likes of Shane Reck, Conor Devitt, Simon Donohoe all fighting for a spot too.

In related news, it was also confirmed yesterday that the Wexford-Galway match will be broadcasted live on television this weekend. It will be live on Irish television broadcaster, TG4.

Throw-in for the match will take place at 5pm on Saturday, Feb 4th.
