Host of events taking place in Johnstown Castle for ‘Spring time’ series

Starting the new year off with a fresh burst of energy, Johnstown Castle and Gardens welcomes those with an interest in the treasures of history to learn more about our local heritage and beyond through our very enjoyable Spring time series….

On Saturday January 27th, Matt Wheeler reflects on his 30 year career in museums and his meandering journey from the Cotswolds to Johnstown Castle. Cheese-rolling, papermaking, tobacco-growing and Everest-climbing are just a few of the weird and wonderful subjects explored.

The following week, treasure seekers are invited to delve into the pre-Christian roots of St Brigid’s Day, as Lorraine shares tales of the Goddess Brigid and her ancient stories. Explore the festival of Imbolg with Lorraine through storytelling, reed gathering, and the hands-on craft of a symbol dating back to Neolithic times. This captivating 3 hour workshop takes place at 10:30am on 1st February.

On Saturday 17th February at 11am, join Eddie Taylor as he reveals the hidden history behind Johnstown’s First World War airship base including recent discoveries from surveying work undertaken. Eddie was part of the team who featured on Johnstown Castles’ appearance on RTE’s programme ‘Great Irish Interiors’ last year.

Since the programme aired Eddie and his colleagues have done further investigation into the First World War Airship Base at Johnstown Castle. Later in the month, Johnstown Castle plays host to a nature inspired creative writing workshop on Saturday February 24th 9am. The workshop, hosted by Sheila Forsey will allow you to unleash your creativity in the heart of nature and history.

Finally, on Saturday 23rd March, Myles Miller will be speaking about the Pierces of Wexford, their foundry on Mill road and their significance throughout history making Wexford the biggest manufacturer of engineering and agricultural machinery in Ireland.

A myriad of events to choose from including our Valentines Jazz event, Yoga and Qi Gong can be booked online. For more information, see www.johnstowncastle.ie or email l.larkin@irishheritagetrust.ie
