Young Wexford man completes 78-hour fast to raise awareness for Gaza

A young Wexford man has completed a 78-hour fast to raise awareness for Gaza…

23-year-old Brian Corcoran, who is a member of the Wexford Amnesty International Group, was camping near the Shamrocks GAA pitch in Enniscorthy for 78-hours.

He endured a fast, continued to work, and limited himself to 2-3 litres of water per day while camping and foregoing his use of technology.

Speaking in a video published onto the Wexford Amnesty International Facebook page, Brian stated:

“I’m still up now in my tent for the night. I just wanted to highlight though why I’m actually fasting for the 78 hours. People in Gaza are facing an approaching famine. Children in northern Gaza, between under 5, 12 to 17% of them are acutely malnourished. This is with parents giving up some of their meals, reducing their meal quantity to feed their children and still not enough unfortunately. It’s predicted that 1.1 million people are facing catastrophic hunger according to the UN. stop this suffering, we need to let aid into Gaza. Currently, only around 97 trucks a day are getting in, whereas the UN predicts at least 500 trucks per day need to get into Gaza to prevent all this suffering and so again this is just reinforcing that we need to get this aid in.”

I appreciate that the UN passed a motion to call for a ceasefire and to hopefully get aid in, but we need to hold Israel accountable and to try get this aid in. So obviously for the last 28 hours I’ve been trying to not, I haven’t been eating. And at times when I’m in work especially and there’s ads playing and they’re going on about like McDonald’s and different foods I would love to be eating. I always think of this statement, it’s nearly a mantra now for me. from a song by Lowkey, which is, This is for Palestine, Ramallah, West Bank, Gaza. This is for the child that is searching for an answer. Wish I could take your tears and replace them with laughter. Long live Palestine. Long live Gaza. Thank you,” he said.
