New Rosslare local election candidate calls on Eamonn Ryan to make Wexford roads safer

New Labour candidate for Rosslare, Damien Corish, has called on Eamon Ryan to make roads safer…

The new Local Election Candidate for the Labour Party, Damien Corish, says that the Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan needs to look at how the Road Safety Authority is functioning given the steady climb in road accidents and fatalities. Mr Corish was commenting after it was revealed that due to GDPR constraints the Road Safety Authority no longer shares data on road accidents with County Councils.

Speaking to Wexford Weekly, Damien Corish said:

“Often after an accident there are calls from public representatives on the local authority for interventions, often at council meetings.. It is mind boggling that councils do not have access to Road Safety Authority data in relation to dangerous stretches of road and yet are responsible for safety at blackspots on our roads.”

Following on, Corish stated that:

“I use my car every day for work and I see poor driver behaviour. But there’s more. Some roads need intervention to make them safe, especially at junctions like Larkins Cross, Killinick and Starvehall. It is bizarre that GDPR can be cited as a reason to withhold information that can make our roads safer and prevent accidents. Since this government came to power we have seen a consistent year on year increase in road accidents, casualties and deaths. That’s because Minister Ryan does not prioritise public roads for investment. The state is awash with money. If I am elected I will campaign for money to be invested to make local roads in Rosslare safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists,” he told us.
