Young Wexford footballer secures transfer to professional English football club

A young Wexford football player has secured a transfer over the pond to England…

A young football player, Niall Mooney, who played with New Ross town, has secured a move over to play professional football with a League 2 side in England.

Mooney, who plays in midfield and who was awarded the Division 1 Player of the Year in the Youths Division by the Wexford Football League in 2023, will make a move to Chesterfield FC ahead of their upcoming season.

In 2023, Chesterfield came in third place of the National League, finishing behind both Wrexham and Notts County in the difficult 24-team-division. However, Justin Tellus’ Chesterfield’s 3-0 victory over Boreham Wood helped to secure promotion for the first time to League 2 for the first time in six years.

A spokesperson for New Ross town expressed the club’s delight and wished Mooney the very best of luck with his new venture to the professional ranks in England:

“Niall has been one of our first kids to start in our Saturday academy joining at the age of 5 along with his brother Cathal. From the first day, you knew Niall was a special talent. He was captain and winner of our first U-10 Wexford Albion mini world cup success. Niall has gone on to excel at every age level for the club, at county underage, Leinster u18 along with the Oscar Trainer squad this year. He finished off his year winning the Wexford u19 Cup. Niall is what every manager could asked for, hardworking honest and respectful to everyone. Niall has the desire to make it to the top and we’re sure he will. We will be following you with great interest. Best of luck from everyone at New Ross Town,” the statement read.
