A former Wexford Senior hurler was on this week’s Wexford Hurling Podcast…
Former Wexford Senior hurler, Eoin Quigley, was the most recent guest on the Wexford Hurling Podcast. One of the first things that he discussed with hosts Ben Bernie and Garry Doran was his last ever game with the Wexford Senior hurling team and how he knew – at that moment – it was time to retire. On the podcast, he openly discussed the pain he felt when Liam Dunne decided to substitute him two minutes before half-time.
Another part of the podcast that many Wexford hurling fans seem to enjoy is the final segment. He discussed the best players he has ever played with, the toughest player that he ever marked, and the one player that he would ‘go to war’ with.
When questioned by hosts Ben Bernie and Garry Doran about his toughest ever opponent, he identified a Kilkenny powerhouse:
“Look, I think the hardest person I ever marked was JJ Delaney. He just was nearly flawless at his peak. And that’s when we came up against him. He was excellent in the air, and he was very wristy. He’d flick the ball away from you and he’d catch ball over you, even if you’re pulling as hard as you can. He’d still fetch it. And he had that lovely strike,” Quigley told the Wexford Hurling Podcast.
Given the calibre of players that Quigley would have came up against during that golden era of hurling just serves to highlight how good JJ Delaney was in the Kilkenny defence.
