Wexford’s David Kennedy makes it 2-0 in professional boxing

Wexford’s David Kennedy made it 2-0 as a professional boxer on Saturday evening in the National Stadium with a judges decision on a score of 38-36…

David ‘Bomber’ Kennedy was fighting 32-year-old Iranian boxer, Bahadur Karami.

It wasn’t a straight forward victory however, as Kennedy survived an early scare as he was knocked down in the first round, but in the end, came out the victor.

I caught up with David post fight to get his immediate reaction to the bout:

“We knew Karami was going to be tough. That’s why we took the fight. It’s boxing you’re not going to learn nothing unless you’re getting tested each fight. That’s what we planned for this fight. We knew we were going to get the rounds. There was a few dirty shots in there – but look it, it’s boxing – it’s not ballet dancing at the end of the day,” Kennedy told Wexford Weekly.

In our post-fight interview at the National Stadium, David mentioned to me a hand injury so I had enquired about that to see how he was feeling.

“I had been having problems with my hand all throughout camp. My last fight got cancelled due to a hand issue so we just said we’d take this one. We strapped it up best we could, but it went in the first round, I think it was the first left hook I threw – but we got through it and that’s what it’s all about.”

At the end of the day the most important thing was David getting to 2-0 and I asked him what the future holds for him and he teased us with some exciting news:

“I don’t want to get myself in too much trouble but I’m hearing there’s a show down in Wexford… close to home. But now I’ll get a scan on this hand and be back in the gym ASAP.”

Lastly, it was striking to again see the travelling contingent from Gorey and Wexford and I asked David what does it mean to have this following who have become known as “The Bomb Squad”.

“I can’t thank people enough. All my sponsors and everyone that buys a ticket. They are allowing me to chase this dream that I have. All credit to them, I’d be nothing without these people. So I want to say thanks to all these people that bought tickets and especially my sponsors as well. They keep me going,” Kennedy told Wexford Weekly.
