Wexford will take on Galway this weekend in Round 3 of the Leinster Senior hurling championship…
With Wexford losing to Dublin in Round 2 and with Kilkenny defeating Galway in the opening round, this is a very important match for both teams with regards to their Leinster final hopes.
The match, fixtured for Pearse Stadium in Salthill, will take place this Saturday. Wexford enter the clash as 9/4 underdogs, but Wexford have been handed a boost ahead of the clash, with both Liam Ryan and Conor McDonald available for selection.
One former Wexford player who is confident of a Wexford win is Richie Kehoe. The Faythe Harriers clubman was speaking to the Wexford Hurling Podcast – and interestingly, he’s confident for a Wexford win:
“I think that if we go about our business the right way, I think that we’ll take Galway. I’m so confident about this, it’s not even funny. I was sitting down during the week – and I thought to myself, what would I do? I think from 2-7 in the Galway team they have absolutely no pace in their backs. We have to go back to the way we played in the League two years ago with the running and short-passing game. I know it’s hard – but I think if we can pull and drag them around the place, we’ll create plenty of opportunities.”
“I see that Liam Ryan and Conor McDonald are supposedly available for selection. It’s the last roll of the dice. This is our final game for this year. We have to go with our best. I know Mac hasn’t played a whole lot – and Liam Ryan has only played bits and pieces – but we have to go with our best. I would be going at these with legs, big time. We can turn them over no problem; we have to be up in their faces. We have to play like how Dublin played against us.”
“We can afford to play like that if we have Mac in on the edge of the square. We have to play direct and we have to use him as much as we can for as long as we can. If I was picking the team in the morning – a do-or-die clash with our backs up against the wall, I’d have him on the edge of the square. He’s our out-ball. Ryan will help around the backs, but we need to attack them with legs,” Richie Kehoe told the Wexford Hurling Podcast.
The former Wexford hurler believes that Wexford will “pull one out of the bag” and that he cannot “see it going any other way” when their backs are against the wall.
Wexford defeated Galway in the Leinster Senior hurling championship by eight points during last year’s encounter, but with travelling to Salthill in a do-or-die, it’s no doubt going to be a lot more difficult this time around.
