There’s a new kind of hero taking over Gorey this weekend — and they’ll be running, walking, dancing, and laughing their way through the town park…
On Sunday 20 July at 11am, as part of the Gorey Market House Festival, Gorey Athletics Club will proudly host the Superhero Fun Run, a colourful, family-friendly 2km dash where fancy dress is not just encouraged, it’s expected.
The idea builds on a long-standing tradition of festival fun runs, with this year’s superhero twist credited to Mick Gleeson of the Festival’s organising committee.
“We just want people to come out, have fun, and have a laugh in a safe, welcoming space, surrounded by the fantastic kids in this town, and right in the middle of a fantastic space like the Park,” said Dean Glennon, Secretary of Gorey AC.
The run is open to all ages and abilities, with no registration required. It’s not about winning — it’s about showing up, dressing up, and enjoying a morning full of smiles and superhero swagger.
Whether you sprint like The Flash or stroll like a sidekick, it’s the costume, the craic, and the community energy that matter most.
While final details around entertainment and best-dressed prizes are still being worked out, support from local businesses and groups has already been outstanding. CK Signs is donating the Start and Finish signage, The Coffee Pod at the Park is backing the event, and Wexford County Council is offering key support for the wider festival activities.
Special thanks go to Mick Gleeson and Kev Byrne from the Gorey Market House Festival Committee, whose encouragement and trust in Gorey AC to host this year’s event have been greatly appreciated.
Volunteers are still very welcome, anyone interested can contact the club directly.
The Superhero Fun Run is just one of several community-driven activities Gorey Athletics Club is rolling out this summer. Since its relaunch earlier this year, the club has already grown to over 220 active members across all age groups, with a juvenile section that’s absolutely thriving.
“This is such an important part of what we’re building,” said Nathan Kelly, joint PRO of the club. “We’ve re-established the club, and events like this are a brilliant way to give back to the community that’s been so supportive.”

Next up for the club is its official Gorey AC Summer Camp, running from Monday 28th July to Friday 1st August, from 10am to 2pm daily at Naomh Éanna GAA in Clonattin. Open to children aged 6 to 12, the camp is part of the national Athletics Ireland programme, offering fun, games, and age-appropriate athletics training designed to build skills and confidence in a relaxed, friendly environment.
And with the cross-country season just around the corner, Gorey AC’s return is only just beginning.
But for now, it’s all about capes, colour, and community. So grab your mask, your mates, and your best superhero pose and we’ll see you at the start line!
