Wexford’s Gambling Scene

When you think of pursuits in and around County Wexford, nature usually features high on the list. This is a beautiful part of Ireland, and is a perfect spot for walking, fishing and similar pastimes. Outside of Wexford itself, it’s a little-known fact that there is plenty of entertainment for those who seek a busier lifestyle. Among the many options within this category is a thriving gambling scene.

Industry Success

Interest in casinos and physical sports betting halls has been boosted by the success of online play. Digital casinos and sportsbooks are available all across Ireland, many of which have their origins here, according to Casino.org, Lukki is the pick of the bunch right now, but there is a host of options to choose from, with new operators arriving on a regular basis.

The appointment of a new Irish regulator to oversee the industry will doubtless lead to some changes for both online and offline establishments. These are interesting times, but whether playing via PC or in a physical gaming hall, tourists and Wexford residents will always have plenty of choice.

New Kid on the Block

Back in 2023, an application was submitted with a view to opening a new casino in the centre of Wexford. The building in Castle Street had previously been occupied by the Bank of Ireland but was sitting idle, waiting to be rejuvenated.

The application was granted and, by April 2025, plans for the casino’s opening were confirmed. The gaming hall is to be called The Olde Bank, in a nod to its former use, but it will be unrecognisable from its banking days. A vast complex with slot machines, poker, roulette, blackjack and other table games promises a lively experience.

The Olde Bank promises to be the best casino in the whole of the Wexford area. Whenever a new business steps in, it has a blank canvas, and the owners are expected to take the opportunity to deliver the biggest gaming hall in the region.

Established Operators

The Olde Bank will join a selection of casinos that have been established in Wexford for some time. Of those already in operation, Flanagan’s Casino in Main Street is arguably the most popular. It’s been a familiar brand within the region for some time, having opened its doors to the public way back in 1967.

The focus is on slot play at Flanagan’s, with a vast choice of fruit machines on site. There is a smaller selection of card and table games, but it’s fair to say that there is something for everyone here.

Flanagan’s has competition from a Main Street rival. Just down the road is the Gold Rush Casino, which can compete across most gaming options. Once again, there is a great range of slots, while players can also enjoy all the card and table games that any gaming hall needs.

Gold Rush is a well-known brand with casinos in ten locations across the Irish Republic. While it could be argued that Flanagan’s has a marginally better choice, many prefer playing with the familiar Gold Rush name.

Best of the Rest

Aside from the two biggest casino providers, there are other options for real money gamers in Wexford. Some of these locations could, however, be considered more as amusement arcades. There should always be a good choice of fruit machines and other arcade games, but the options for poker, roulette and blackjack may be limited.

These venues are still worth exploring, and the list includes the Fun Palace in Arklow. Another option is the Q Casino at Courtown Harbour in Gorey. While it doesn’t quite have the reputation of some of the more well-known establishments in the region, there is a good choice across all games, and the Q Casino is worth a visit.

The Sporting Scene

Gambling in Wexford isn’t just about casino play, even though this is one of the best places in Ireland for lovers of slots, poker, roulette and other table games. Like most of Ireland, there is a serious sporting scene here, and much of it focuses on horse racing.

The obvious place to come for racegoers is the Wexford Racecourse itself. From 2016, the venue has focused exclusively on National Hunt racing, and there are many top class events taking place here.

Away from horse racing, Wexford is a hub for Gaelic Sports. Rugby union and football are also played extensively here. Casino play and the gambling industry as a whole play an important role in Wexford tourism. While Dublin may have a higher density of gaming halls, the establishments that are here offer an excellent nighttime diversion for visitors and locals alike.

Across the region, there are many existing casinos, but the addition of the Olde Bank is set to take the gaming experience to the next level. There are top class sporting venues, so whatever your demands from the gambling industry might be, Wexford has you covered.
