The Irish Hairdressers Federation today (Tuesday 23rd September) had an urgent meeting with Leader of Independent Ireland, Michael Collins TD, in Leinster House….
The delegation was led by Federation President Mark O’Keeffe, spokesperson Lisa Eccles, and Committee Member Ciara Dorrington of Kida Hair & Co, Co.Cork.
The Federation is campaigning for the restoration of the VAT rate to 9% for hairdressing, barbering, and beauty businesses and appealed to Deputy Collins to hold firm on his commitment to support the sector.
Commenting after the meeting with Deputy Michael Collins, President of the Hairdressers Federation, Mark O’Keeffe said:
“The Independents, have historically been strong supporters of local businesses like hairdressers and barbers. Small, family-run salons are at breaking point, and rising costs are making it impossible to survive. Without meaningful tax relief, many will be forced to close their doors.”
Deputy Michael Collins TD, Leader of Independent Ireland, made clear his continued opposition to any delay in VAT reductions for hospitality and personal services.
Over the summer months, he responded to reports that the promised €1bn VAT relief for restaurants and pubs could be pushed back to July 2026:
“This is a slap in the face to thousands of small businesses and their staff who were led to believe they would get relief this year. Instead, they are being strung along with mixed messaging and empty promises while their businesses close around them. If the decision to postpone VAT relief until 2026 goes ahead, it is nothing short of a betrayal to small businesses.”
The Irish Hairdressers Federation is the representative body for Irish salon owners, representing over 500 salon owners nationwide, with a total of 30,000 people employed.
