Glowing through the Irish winter: Moisturising serums that actually work

Irish winters are brutal on skin. The cold winds off the coast, the constant rain, the overheated shops and offices you duck into for relief – your face doesn’t stand a chance. By November, most of us are dealing with dry patches, dullness, and that general look of someone who’s been battling the elements for weeks on end. Regular moisturiser just doesn’t cut it when the weather’s this aggressive.

I used to think serums were one of those unnecessary beauty industry inventions, something expensive that marketing teams convinced people they needed. Then I actually tried using moisturising serums properly during winter, and the difference was honestly remarkable. My skin went from tight, flaky, and permanently uncomfortable to actually looking healthy despite the weather doing its worst.

Why Irish winter destroys your skin

The problem with Irish winters isn’t the cold alone – it’s the combination of factors that strip moisture from your skin relentlessly. You’re outside in biting wind, then into heated buildings, back outside into rain, repeat endlessly. Central heating dries the air, hot showers strip your skin’s natural oils and the lack of humidity means moisture evaporates faster than it should.

Your regular summer skincare routine simply isn’t equipped to handle this. What worked perfectly in July leaves you looking haggard by December. You need products that deliver serious hydration and help your skin retain moisture despite everything working against it.

What moisturising serums actually do

Moisturising serums are concentrated formulations with smaller molecules that penetrate deeper than regular moisturisers. Think of moisturiser as a protective barrier on your skin’s surface, whilst serum works underneath, delivering active ingredients where they’re actually needed. Used together, they’re far more effective than either product alone.

The best winter serums contain humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin that draw moisture into your skin, plus ingredients like niacinamide or peptides that strengthen your skin barrier. This combination means your skin not only gets hydrated but actually holds onto that hydration rather than losing it to the harsh environment.

Finding serum options for sensitive skin

Many Irish people’s skin tends towards sensitivity (blame genetics, weather or both). This means many serums with active ingredients can cause irritation, redness, or reactions. Brands like La Roche-Posay have built their entire reputation on products formulated specifically for sensitive skin, using minimal ingredients and avoiding common irritants.

When you’re dealing with sensitivity, fragrance-free is essential. Those lovely-smelling serums might seem appealing, but fragrances are one of the top causes of skin reactions. Avoid serums with high concentrations of acids or retinoids during winter unless your skin’s already accustomed to them – winter’s stressful enough without adding potentially irritating ingredients.

The layering technique that actually works

Here’s where people often go wrong: they either skip serum entirely or use it incorrectly. The proper order is cleanse, serum on slightly damp skin, wait a minute for it to absorb, then moisturiser to seal everything in. That final moisturiser step is crucial – it locks in the serum and provides the protective barrier your skin needs.

Applying serum to damp skin increases absorption significantly. After cleansing, pat your face mostly dry but leave it slightly damp, then apply serum immediately. The moisture helps carry the serum’s ingredients deeper into your skin, making it far more effective than applying to completely dry skin.

Budget and buying sensibly

Serums can be expensive, but you don’t need to spend €100 on a tiny bottle for them to work. Many effective options exist at various price points. The key is looking at ingredients rather than brand prestige – a €30 serum with quality hyaluronic acid and niacinamide will outperform a €80 serum with fancy packaging but mediocre formulation.

Retailers like Notino stock extensive ranges at competitive prices, making it easier to build a proper routine without overspending. Local chemists have limited selections and often charge more, whilst online shopping gives you access to wider ranges and better value.

Realistic expectations

Serums aren’t magic, so don’t expect to wake up with completely different skin after one use. Proper results take consistent use over several weeks. Most people notice initial improvements within a week or two, with significant results after a month of regular use.

If your serum’s not working after 4-6 weeks of consistent use, it’s time to try something different. Don’t persist with products that aren’t delivering results just because they’re expensive or highly rated. Skin is individual, and what works brilliantly for others might do nothing for you.

Getting through Irish winter with decent skin isn’t about having an elaborate routine or expensive products – it’s about understanding what your skin actually needs and giving it proper hydration to cope with the relentless weather. A good serum makes that achievable without spending hours or a fortune on skincare.
