PhoneWatch has welcomed new figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showing a that the number of burglaries decreased national, however in the Wexford Gardaí division has increased by 18% in the 12 months of 2025 compared to 2024 with 348 burglaries occurring. This is the second highest burglary increase across the Garda divisions in the country. It’s an unsettling trend that homeowners need to acknowledge and address their individual home security measures, to help combat the issue.
From a national perspective, there was a significant 13% reduction in burglaries nationwide from 2024 to 2025. This is the first decline in yearly burglary rates in three years. Recorded burglaries fell from 9,748 to 8,469, marking one of the most encouraging year-on-year declines in recent years.
The CSO data shows that 22 of the 28 Garda divisions experienced a decrease, one remained unchanged, and five recorded an increase. These shifts highlight the growing impact of stronger home security measures and increased public awareness across Ireland.
Substantial Shifts Across Garda Divisions
Several Garda divisions recorded particularly striking improvements. Roscommon/Longford saw the largest decrease at 61% (103 burglaries), followed by Mayo at 44% (66 burglaries), Sligo/Leitrim at 40% (86 burglaries) and Limerick at 38% (357 burglaries). These reductions may reflect a combination of factors, including increased Garda visibility, stronger community engagement, and a growing uptake of monitored alarm systems and smart home security technology.
In contrast, however, some regions did see increases in burglary rates over the 12 months. Dublin Eastern region recorded the highest increase at 24% (492 burglaries), followed by Wicklow at 17% (400 burglaries) and Kerry at 8% (152 burglaries). Homeowners in these regions are encouraged to be especially mindful of their security routines.
Improved Home Security Playing a Central Role
PhoneWatch attributes part of the national decline to homeowners continued focus on implementing strong home security measures. The increased use of monitored alarm systems coupled with the technology developments on these systems has certainly been a contributing factor to this decline.

- Keep valuables out of sight, avoid leaving expensive items visible through windows.
- Secure sheds and side gates, as tools can be used to gain entry.
- Avoid posting travel plans on social media, which can signal an empty home.
