It was a perfect afternoon for two young Wexford boxers…
Young Gorey boxer, Kayleigh Byrne, is through to the finals of the Four Nations Cup taking place at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, Motherwell in Scotland.
In the semi-final today, County Wexford boxer and 18-year-old Kayleigh overcame her Welsh opponent — inflicting damage and winning with a 5-0 unanimous decision on the judge’s scorecards.
Byrne, fighting in the 51kg competition with Team Ireland U19s, has now been placed into the final of the competition.
In the final, she will be coming up against an English opponent, Serena Mali, who defeated her Scottish opponent in the semi-final today too. The impressive Mali has won multiple national titles in England and recently represented her country at the World Boxing Futures Cup Bangkok 2026 in March.
Meanwhile, Wexford town boxer and multiple national title holder, Kalib Walshe (60kg) beat Reon Wright of Wales 5-0, in his semi-final — and he now also marches into the final. Walshe is set to enter the ring against England’s George Francis in the final. Francis enters the ring full of confidence on the back of successes at the 2025 Haringey Box Cup Final and then the England’s National Youth Championships 2026 held in February of this year.
The finals will take place tomorrow (Friday 12 June). A stream will be made available on YouTube to watch the fights. Times are yet to be confirmed.
A number of other boxers are also named to represent Wexford and Ireland at the Four Nations Cup. They include 63kg Nadia Maj, Sacre Coeur BC, Wexford (U15), 54kg Sean Kelly, St. Abban’s/Kilmyshall BC, Wexford (U17), 60kg, 80kg and Blake Dunne, Rosslare, Wexford (U19).
The Four Nations competition takes place from Thursday 11th June to Sunday 14th June 2026. It includes boxers at all age categories from U15 to Elite, representing Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales.
