A static speed camera in Glenmore, County Kilkenny, has been the source of controversy over the past year…
One outspoken critic of the static speed camera is Wexford TD, George Lawlor. Thousands of speeding fines have been issued to Wexford residents and it is understood that approximately €5 million has been generated from the camera.
The camera is located shortly after the speed limit transitions from 100kmh to 80kmh. Motorists say this doesn’t allow sufficient distance to safely and gradually reduce speed before reaching the camera.
Wexford TD, Lawlor, secured data from the Department of Justice and has labelled it “grossly unfair” when speaking in Dáil Eireann. The data highlights a major discrepancy between fines handed out in Glenmore compared with the other static speed cameras set up across the county. Lawlor has called for fair treatment and that “fines and points must be rescinded” due to “appalling signage”.
Speaking in response to TD George Lawlor, Simon Harris said:
“What people should do is slow down. I am trying to be constructive. The problem is that people are dying on our roads. If the assertion is that something is wrong, or if the camera is broken, then I would ask someone to look into the broken camera. If the camera is not working, it should be fixed by the Department of Transport or the Gardai. The broader issue is that these static cameras are making our roads safer. If the camera is catching people speeding and administrating penalty points or fines, then that is Government road safety policy,” Simon Harris said.
Static speed camera fines (May 2025 to May 2026):
Glenmore N25 – 30,599 Fines
Mayo N17 – 11,467 Fines
Donegal N13 – 2,925 Fines
Carlow N80 – 15,880 Fines
Cork N22 – 3,369 Fines
Limerick N69 – 1,051 Fines

The camera at Glenmore is unfair and is not situated in the proper place. You must get enough time to reduce speed from 100k to 80k safely. As it is at present, drivers are slapping on breaks quickly- This will cause a serious accident.
