Wexford TD Takes Significant Pay Cut And Urges Other TD’s To Do The Same

Wexford TD Verona Murphy has taken a significant pay cut…

Verona Murphy, an Independent TD from Wexford, has taken a significant pay cut in solidarity with those who lost their jobs because of the second ‘lockdown’.

Murphy believes the second lockdown could have been avoided and she is now calling on the Ministers and her colleagues in Dáil Éireann, who have legislated these new restrictions, to “now take a salary cut in line with the PUP.”

“I now call on all TDs who have looked for and supported these increased restrictive measures to immediately reduce their salaries in line with the PUP payment for the duration of Level 5 measures and show that they are really in this with the people of Ireland. I particularly look to those whose ineptitude and inability to put in a proper Test, Trace and Isolate system over the past 8 months has lead us to where we are tonight,” she said.

The basic salary of a backbench TD is €96,189, while Cabinet ministers and junior ministers receive additional allowances.

The Pandemic Unemployment Payment was recently restored to €350 per-week, which is the amount Verona Murphy will be now earning for the duration of the Level 5 restrictions.
