History Of Wexford Wanderers Cricket Club

A cricket club in Wexford? Who knew?….. In this article, we’ll have a quick look into the history of Wexford’s Premier Cricket Club.

Wexford Wanderers Cricket Club was formed in 1976 by James O’Connor, Alan Lynch and Ted Doyle. Since then, the club has grown in numbers. The Wexford Wanderers CC now has two senior men’s teams both competing in both Leinster league and cup competitions, along with two underage sides, a mix of boys and girls.

The club has some very successful periods such as in 2002 when the club’s 1st XI won the Leinster Middle Cup and the club’s 2nd XI won the Leinster Intermediate League. In 2017, the 1st XI won Division 7 of Leinster and were Wallace Cup runners up.

In 2018, they followed up that success by winning Division 6 and Winning the Wallace Cup. In 2019, the 2nd XI were victorious in winning the Leinster Minor Cup which capped off a fantastic three year period in the club’s history

The club has always provided an ecouraged youth cricket throughout the county. Herbie Honohan and Peter Hudson in tandem look after youth cricket in the club. They also do a lot of work throughout the county in primary schools, where they have brought criket to a range of schools. This has given kids a chance to play a game most would be unfamiliar with.

The recent attraction with youth cricket in the county has resulted in an award, “The Crossy Cup” ( named after Brian Crossy), being given to the winners of the Co. Wexford Primary Schools competition in the near future.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the club is the numbers of members playing from various nationalities from all corners of the world, which leads to a rich culture in the club.

This was evident when over one weekend when ten different nationalities were represented across the club’s two senior sides.
