Gorey native breaks record for ‘The 26 Peaks Challenge’

On 5th August 2023, Patrick Curley from Gorey broke the Fastest-Known Time record for completing the highest point in every county…

The challenge, which is commonly known as The 26 Peaks Challenge, challenges people to climb to the highest point in every county across the Republic of Ireland.

Patrick smashed the previous record by over 7 hours, completing it in 53 hours 13 mins.

The Gorey native started on Mweelrea, Co Mayo, and then worked his way around the country, ending at Errigal Co Donegal.

Patrick, who owns Peak Fitness Gym in Gorey, was helped by an amazing support team from the gym who safely got him around the country, not to mention the groups that turned up all around the country to support him.

It took Patrick, who is a passionate trail runner, 3 months of consistent training morning, noon and night to prepare for the extreme challenge he had set himself.

Preparation wasn’t easy for Patrick either. To prepare, he ran Croghan Mountain 57 times in 50 days consecutively to prepare his body and mind for the challenge that lay ahead.

Patrick and 15 other Peak Fitness members are now training to take on Everest Base Camp in October. They are currently fundraising for North Wexford Hospice, with 100% of the proceeds raised going directly to the charity.
