Two Wexford boys were on a successful Irish fishing team recently….

Team Ireland won Gold for U16 World Fishing Championship in the Netherlands in October.

Two of the team’s members were from Wexford. They included Max Roche from Garrylough and Kai Butler from Duncannon.

Team Ireland’s Under-16 Shore Angling Team has made the nation proud by securing the top spot at the 2023 World Championships held in the Netherlands. With their exceptional skills and unwavering determination, the young anglers outshone the competition, bringing home the coveted Gold Medal.

In a thrilling display of talent, the Team Ireland U-16 Shore Angling Team showcased their angling prowess, demonstrating a deep understanding of the sport and mastering the art of catching fish from the shoreline. Their exemplary teamwork and sportsmanship were on full display throughout the tournament.

The World Championships, which brought together angling enthusiasts from around the globe, served as a challenging test of skill, patience, and precision. Team Ireland’s young anglers rose to the occasion, securing victory and proudly hoisting the Irish flag high on the world stage.

Ireland’s Minister of Sport, Thomas Byrne, expressed his admiration for the team’s remarkable achievement, stating:

Team Captains John Marshall and Brian Cooke, shared their thoughts on the victory:

“Winning the Gold Medal at the World Championships is a dream come true for all of us. We trained relentlessly, and our teamwork was the key to our success. This victory wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our coaches, families, and sponsors.”
