Wexford boxer Patrick Kelly loses out to Afghan representative

16-year-old Wexford boxer Patrick Kelly can walk away with his head held high…

Kelly, who fights out of Kilmyshal Boxing Club in Wexford, represented Ireland at the World Junior Boxing Championships in Yerevan, Armenia.

He made a fantastic start to the tournament. In his opening fight, he defeated Edgar Cornejo Pinacho of Mexico in the featherweight division, boxing at 57kg. Kelly won 5-0, the judge’s giving him a unanimous win.

Then, Kelly continued his winning ways in splendid fashion with a win over Ognjen Antic of Serbia which has now placed him into the quarter-finals of the International competition.

In the quarter-finals of the competition, he was drawn against the Afghan representative Amanollah Sahak. Unfortunately, Kelly lost out on a judge’s decision.

Despite that, he should walk away with his head held high. The opportunity to box at the World Junior Championships will be a learning curve for Kelly, and there’s no doubt that he has a big future ahead in the ring.
